SANTA MONICA—Congressman Henry Waxman will speak at the Public Library this Wednesday, September 25, starting at 7 p.m.

The Santa Monica Democratic Club will host Congressman Waxman as guest speaker for their September meeting. The speech will address federal and local issues, followed by a question and answer session. The event is free and open for the public to attend.

Jay Johnson, President of the Santa Monica Democratic Club, told the Canyon News among items to be discussed would be the crisis in Syria, the impending budget deficit limit battle, and the Affordable Health Care Act. The presentation would be a chance for attendees to hear “closed-door, insider information from Washington,” said Johnson.

According to Johnson, the Congressman will also provide updates on affairs impacting the local community, such as the future of the Santa Monica Airport, the Veterans Administration Land development in West L.A. and the California Health Benefit Exchange beginning in October.

Covered California, the brand name for the California Health Benefit Exchange, is set to begin operations next month. “A lot of people are confused and want details on how the exchanges will work,” said Johnson. The meeting will offer an opportunity for residents to seek clarification from Congressman Waxman on how the Affordable Health Care program may affect them.

Johnson expects around fifty attendees for Wednesday’s meeting and encourages anyone interested to come participate. Those unable to attend Wednesday's meeting can always contact Congressman Waxman at:

The meeting will be held September 25 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Santa Monica Public Library, located at 601 Santa Monica Blvd.
