SANTA MONICA—In the wake of the violent shootings throughout the area, city and state government officials are taking action to fix violence problems in the community.
Rep. Henry Waxman will hold a forum on gun violence, mental health and community recovery on Monday, July 15 at 10 a.m. in the Santa Monica City Council Chambers.
The forum comes in repose to the
Santa Monica shootings, where five people were killed. After the shootings, Waxman called on Congress to take action against gun violence and to remove assault rifles from the streets.
“This is the seventh mass shooting in the last year,” Waxman said in a press release. “Enough is enough. It’s well past time that Congress take action to keep these dangerous weapons off our streets.”
Waxman said that he would work to pressure Congress to fix “loophole-ridden gun laws” and to keep the assault weapons from the streets and out of the communities.
Santa Monica Mayor Pam O’Connor, California State Senator Ted Lieu and L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky will also attend and take part in the forum.
