SANTA MONICA—Every year, the Santa Monica Farmers Market holds a special Halloween event, The Annual All You Can Carry Pumpkin Patch. Participants must grab all the pumpkins they can hold and carry them down a 25-foot runway. The Pumpkin Patch began its annual run in 1988 after Laura Avery, the Farmers Market Supervisor for the City of Santa Monica, returned from a trip to Ohio where a local farmer sold off his excess produce: two dollars for all you can carry. “We always do it the Wednesday that’s closest to Halloween,” says Laura. This year, the Pumpkin Patch was held on Halloween as market-goers lined up in costume for a chance to grab as many pumpkins as they could carry, for only five dollars.
“[The All You Can Carry Pumpkin Patch] is just to have fun on Halloween, that’s why we do it. We want people to overcome any resistance they have to making a public spectacle of themselves. We want [people] to come out and just get silly in the pumpkin patch," said Avery. © Copyright 2011 by canyon-news.com |
