Million Puppet March In Santa Monica
Posted by Kyle Maloney on Apr 23, 2013 - 3:06:37 PM

SANTA MONICA—Puppeteers and puppet supporters are encouraged to be a part of history by attending Los Angeles’s largest puppet parade ever on Sunday, April 28.

The Million Puppet March will take place in Santa Monica along the Third Street Promenade beginning at 10 a.m.

The parade is the final event of the L.A. Puppet Fest—a month of puppet celebrations and merriment around the city, including a variety of shows, films, workshops and exhibits. The parade begins at 11 a.m. and will march south along the promenade, with the closing ceremonies scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

The Million Puppet March, an organization in support of public television and radio educational programming, garnered worldwide media coverage with its Washington march in Fall 2012, and has organized this month’s parade in Santa Monica.

The Puppet Parade Grand Marshall, Alan Cook, was the founder of the International Puppetry Museum in Pasadena and will be recognized at the Closing Ceremonies for the L.A. Puppet Fest.

According to its Facebook page, Million Puppet March is telling supporters to “BYOP or make [a puppet] there. Prizes for lucky paraders include a behind the scenes tour for 2 of The Jim Henson Company Hollywood lot! We’re trying to break a world record so bring the whole family.”

The Puppets for Peace Drive will also be accepting puppet donations at the parade. The drive works to promote peace by way of puppetry and is currently collecting puppets to send to the school that eight-year-old Martin Richard attended before he died in the Boston Marathon bombings last week.

In response to the Puppets for Peace Drive, Million Puppet March, Inc. received a letter from the Boston Public School district saying, “Thank you for your kindness. We would love to have some puppets to work with our students...[They] have dealt with a great trauma and we strive to help them in any way possible.”
