Neighborhood Greenway Project Kicks Off
Posted by LaDale Anderson on Feb 26, 2013 - 5:56:16 AM

SANTA MONICA—On March 16, the city will host its first interactive workshop for the Michigan Avenue Neighborhood Greenway project, as indicated in a press release from the city’s website. The workshop will implement project objectives and ask for ideas, feedback and concerns from the community. Citizens will partake in a one-hour walk or bike audit. The audit will allow community members to join in groups to visit the various project areas with City staff and the design team to improve opportunities in the public arena.

The goal of the planning process is to engage the neighborhoods and community stakeholders with focus on the Greenway: the Pico Neighborhood, Santa Monica High School, Santa Monica College, the Bergamot Station Arts Center area and the residents of Michigan Avenue.

The community’s involvement in the project is a critical to assist the development along the greenway, as well as ensuring economic opportunity, equity and environmental sustainability throughout the projected area. The project has been funded by a Caltrans Environmental Justice Grant.

The Michigan Avenue Neighborhood Greenway project is to enhance the pedestrian and cyclist experience along a 3-mile corridor on Michigan Avenue. The project will connect communities through the destination. New amenities include increased landscaping, crosswalk improvements, cycling features, benches, new signage, public art and additions to neighborhood streetscape.

Refreshments, childcare and Spanish translators will be on hand. The event will take place at Virginia Avenue Park at the Thelma Terry Building at 2200 Virginia Avenue. The event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
