New Frank Gehry Tower In Santa Monica

SANTA MONICA—Modern architectural icon and local resident, Frank Gehry, has been commissioned by investors to design a 22-story tower in downtown Santa Monica.
A two-acre lot on the corner of Ocean Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard has been designated for the structure which will serve as a mixed-use hotel and residential tower. Combining living spaces with retail, the tower will contain 125 rooms and 22 condos, with street-level dining and shopping available to the public.

The Ocean Avenue Project will be the latest representation of Gehry’s signature style of architecture: Massive structures with twists, turns and wavy walls. In addition, a 36,000 square foot museum is expected to be built alongside the new tower.

The project is expected to produce $72.7 million in annual spending, establish 1,394 new jobs and generate nearly four million dollars in tax revenue for the coastal city, according to developers: M. David Paul Associates and the Worthe Real Estate Group.
Gehry, 84, has undertook several Los Angeles area architectural projects in the past. In 1984, he designed the Air and Space Exhibit building at the California Museum of Science and Industry, and in 2003, he constructed the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
The Ocean Avenue Project is currently awaiting approval from the city and it will be decided if construction will begin by the end of March.
