Way Over Yonder Festival Is Coming
Posted by Amanda Macke on Sep 25, 2013 - 6:44:51 PM

SANTA MONICA—For the first time, legendary Newport Folk Festival is traveling from Rhode Island to present the Way Over Yonder Festival at the Santa Monica Pier on October 5-6.

The Newport Folk Festival considers itself “ America’s original music festival.” Founded by George Wein in 1959, the Rhode Island Festival has a rich folk history with famous performances by musicians such as Johnny Cash, Howlin’ Wolf, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. The festival continues to be popular amongst music lovers, selling out five months in advance for this year’s show.

Now, Newport Folk is taking the show on the road for the first time, thanks to a promoter from California who approached organizers with the idea during the 2012 Newport Folk Festival.

The upcoming festival promises to bring, “the same spirit west and will feature two stages on the historic and picturesque Santa Monica Pier, a perfect bookend to Newport Folk’s primary location on the New England shore.”

Jay Sweet, producer of the Newport Folk Festival, told the Associated Press that while he hopes the Santa Monica festival could become an annual event, he’s not trying to clone Newport. “I want this to be its own thing,” Sweet said.

The line-up was announced September 25 and features performances by Neko Case, Conor Oberst, First Aid Kit, Brett Dennen, among others. Way Over Yonder is an all-ages event, though those under-21 years will not be permitted in areas that serve alcohol.

Single-day passes can still be purchased for $45 and two-day passes for $80. Tickets will also be available to purchase at the box-office day of the show depending on availability.

The eco-friendly festival encourages attendees to arrive on bikes and is offering free bike valet just south of the pier. Food and beverages will also be available at the venue. The event will open at 1 p.m. each day with performances kicking off at 2 p.m. Click hereto view the set times for each day.
