SANTA MONICA—On Friday, June 7, President Obama attended a fundraiser in Santa Monica, only three miles away from the shooting spree that occurred at Santa Monica City College the same day.

President Obama arrived in the area at around 11 a.m. Pacific Standard Time. The President went on to attend two fundraising events for the Democratic National Committee at the residence of Peter and Megan Chernin.

Although the Secret Service became aware of the Santa Monica College shooting, the shooting did not impact the President’s visit. President Obama attended a lunch with 100 donors and a reception that had 35 more donors. To attend the event, guests paid between $10,000 and $32,400.

The shooting did impact the President’s post-fundraiser travel plans. Instead of returning to the Santa Monica Airport, after the fundraiser he took a motorcade directly from the fundraiser and departed from LAX a little before 3 p.m. local time.

The President also planned to visit Sunnylands, an estate in Rancho Mirage. The plans for that visit involved meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping. The goal of that meeting was to discuss Chinese cyber-attacks on American corporations and the American government.
