Partnership Walk Raises $400,000
Posted by Alana Woodford on Oct 29, 2012 - 3:54:22 PM

SANTA MONICA—On October 28, the Los Angeles leg of the annual Partnership Walk raised $400,000 to end poverty in Asia and Africa. Held at the Santa Monica Pier, the walk drew 2,100 participants.

Organized by PartnershipsInAction and sponsored by the Aga Khan Foundation, the walk is conducted in Atlanta, Birmingham, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Memphis, Orlando, San Antonio, and San Francisco yearly to “raise awareness about global poverty and bridge Americans’ spirit of generosity by reaching out to uplift people living in extreme poverty,” according to the PartnershipsInAction website.

Special guests included Richard Bloom, the Mayor of Santa Monica, and Jim Dyer, the district governor of the Rotary Club of America. The walk also featured celebrities, world music, dance performances, and interactive educational exhibits on the foundation’s work toward alleviating poverty.

All proceeds from the walk will benefit the Aga Khan Foundation’s philanthropic goals, including improving access to healthcare, promoting gender equality, and ending illiteracy throughout communities in Asia and Africa. The Aga Khan Foundation website describes their work to “address the root causes of poverty by supporting and sharing innovative solutions in the areas of health, education, rural development, civil society and the environment. Using community-based approaches to meet basic human needs, the Foundation builds the capacity of community and non-governmental organizations to have a lasting impact on reducing poverty.”

PartnershipsInAction also organizes fundraising runs and golf tournaments around the country. According to a written statement from foundation officials, the events have raised $48 million dollars to support their charitable programs.
