RJ Palacio Expects To Bring "Wonder"
Posted by Carmen Herrera on Mar 20, 2013 - 10:43:47 PM

SANTA MONICAAuthor RJ Palacio will conclude the community reading program Santa Monica READS this Saturday, March 23, at the Santa Monica Public Library.

Palacio will be presenting on her latest book, "Wonder" and will open discussions for parents and their children regarding topics from the text. Wonder revolves a 10-year old boy living with a deformity on his face and struggling to fit in with children his age upon entering a public school.

Palacio hopes that the book’s hopeful message will reach out to children and the community about fitting in and acceptance. “I hope that kids will come away with the idea that they are noticed: their actions are noted.” said Palacio on her website. “Maybe not immediately or directly or even in a way that seems obvious, but if they’re mean, someone suffers. If they’re kind, someone benefits. And the choice is theirs: whether to be noticed for being kind or for being mean.”

Wonder has been getting numerous critical acclaim from critics everywhere upon its release last year and was named the Best Books of the Month for Kids in February 2012 from Amazon. The book has also received rave reviews worldwide, from The London Times to Entertainment Weekly.

Open and free to the public, the tales of "Wonder" will also be adapting a series of selected readings from the book on stage. The lead role of the story’s protagonist, Auggie, will be played by young actor Peter Dankleson, in a series of special performances before Palacio’s arrival.

The event will take place at the Lincoln Middle School Auditorium, located at 1501 California Avenue, Santa Monica, CA. starting at 2:00 p.m. Palacio will be holding a book signing immediately following the event. For more information about The Voices of Wonder, visit the library website at smpl.org or call (310) 458-8600.
