SANTA MONICA—Each year the Rent Control Board in Santa Monica approves rent increases for any eligible rent-controlled units located in the city. The point of the rent increase is to accommodate the owner’s own increase in operating expenses.

This September, those who live in a rent-controlled unit in Santa Monica can expect an increase in rent if the property owners make sure the following occur:all registration fees and added penalties are paid by August 1, the units are properly registered, there are no citations left unfixed, and there are notices of violation of health, safety, or housing laws. The owner of the property must also be in compliance with all of the provisions of the Rent Control Law, give proper written notice, and lastly the tenant must have moved into the unit before September 1 of this year.
If the Rent Control Board in Santa Monica decides to increase rent and if all of these requirements are met by the owners of the rent-controlled units, those who live in rent-controlled units in Santa Monica can expect rent increases beginning September 1 of this year.
