SANTA MONICA—Santa Monica College police have released a sketch of a man who is suspected of having recently robbed a textbook buyback vendor stand on campus.
On December 15, at about 1 p.m., the suspect demanded that the vendor give him money and then brandished a silver semi-automatic handgun from his backpack, according to an alert released by the Santa Monica College Police Department. When the vendor, a wholesaler not employed by the college, immediately complied with the demand and handed over the money, the suspect ran northbound toward Pico Boulevard. A Santa Monica Police Department call log entry for assistance on that date from the 1900 block of Pico Boulevard, where SMC is located, puts the time of the call at 1:13 p.m.
Witnesses described the suspect to police as an 180-pound white man with brown hair in his late 20s or early 30s and standing at about 5 feet, 11 inches. At the time of the armed robbery incident, the suspect was wearing a black baseball cap and aviator-style glasses. Also, he was wearing a charcoal grey hoodie, dark-colored jeans and carrying a black backpack in which he kept the gun. The police sketch indicates that the suspect may have a lightly grown facial beard. He remains at large.
SMC police ask anyone with information regarding this crime, which is still under investigation, to call 310-458-8941. Information can be shared on an anonymous basis by calling 310-434-8847.They advise that when confronted by a robber, comply with requests made and obtain a detailed description of the person in question. Once it is safe to do so, call campus police at 310-434-4300 or 911.
The most recently reported incident in which a suspect threatened physical harm to someone on the SMC campus in order to take property occurred in early December near the north fountain area of the QUAD, which is close to the bookstore. In both instances, the suspects fled north toward Pico Boulevard and wore similarly-colored clothing. However, their dissimilar physical descriptions indicate that they are not one in the same person.
