SMC Shooting Spurs Gun Control Talks
Posted by Sebastian Sarti on Jun 19, 2013 - 10:41:57 AM

SANTA MONICA—The shooting incident at Santa Monica City College on Friday, June 7 has inspired talks in California’s capitol on having more gun control laws. Currently, investigators are concerned with how the Santa Monica College gunman was able to acquire the weapons and how he was able to obtain such a large amount of ammunition.

The SMC shooter, John Zawahri, was armed with over 1,300 rounds of ammunition. This large amount has lead California lawmakers to question the efficacy of California’s current gun laws.

On the Monday, June 10, Democrats in the state Senate and Assembly called for greater gun control laws in hopes of preventing a repeat of the SMC shooting.

A seven bill gun control package has already cleared the Senate. State Senator Kevin de Leon is pushing for new gun laws that would require buyers to pass background checks before obtaining ammunition and would require sellers of ammunition to carry permits.

While there has been a renewed push to increase gun control, there are many that feel these new restrictions are unnecessary. Gun lobbyists believe that ammunition background checks are pointless since there are already background checks for people that buy guns. Many advocates of the Second Amendment believe that gun control should be more focused on preventing criminal and the mentally ill from acquiring guns, rather than the general population.
