SMC Student Threatens To Shoot Campus

SANTA MONICA—At around 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 16, the Los Angeles Police Department received a call from a male Santa Monica College (SMC) student threatening to “shoot up the school” and take his own life. LAPD officers notified the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) shortly after the call was made.

According to the SMPD, the suspect allegedly threatened to shoot up various schools leading officers to alert SMC and neighboring John Adams and Will Rodgers Middle Schools to lock down their campuses. East L.A College and several public schools near Monterey Park were also notified to evacuate.

 

LAPD and SMPD joined forces to identify the male subject and verify that he was scheduled to attend class the day the threat was made.

 

Officers were able to locate and detain the 19-year-old suspect in the Psychological Services Office of the SMC campus at around 9:45 a.m. The suspect was unarmed at the time the arrest was made.
