SANTA MONICA—For the third year in a row, the Santa Monica Public Library received its 5-star rating by the Library Journal.

Santa Monica Public Library was the only southern California library to earn this high of a rating in the Library Journal’s Index of Public Library Service 2012 ratings, announced November 1. The index ranked 7,570 public libraries on the level of service provided, evaluating per capita circulation. Of those libraries, only 262 earned 3, 4, or 5 stars, with SMPL in the upper tier of that group. On November 13, they tweeted, “Congratulations to us! The Santa Monica Public Library has once again earned a 5-star rating from the Library Journal.”

The Library Journal, a trade publication for librarians that covers news regarding the library world with an emphasis on public libraries, rated libraries based on visits, program attendance, and public internet/computer use. The ratings are to help guide public libraries on how they can better inform their stakeholders of achievements and improve library awareness and funding.

City librarian, Greg Mullen says, “The Santa Monica Public Library is an excellent starting place for whatever you want to do or be. Thousands visit every day to accelerate their job search, explore new business ideas, stimulate their imagination or build new connections.”
