Santa Monica 5000 Raises $91,000

SANTA MONICA—At the 8th annual Santa Monica 5000 event on October 4, more than $91,000 was raised towards education. People of all levels including collegiate sprinters to new moms participated in the event.

The Santa Monica 5000 included a 5k, a 10k and a 3k family dash and an elite west coast invitational ”“ which consisted of top athletes from around the world. Presented along with the run was a health and fitness festival that was held on the pier, cash prizes for the three top overall finishers, and pancakes at the end of the finish line. The run was held to help encourage donations to school sports teams and the schools themselves, including the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation.

The winners of this year’s 10k for men included Nicholas Hilton, 24, who completed the course in under 31 minutes, Lauren Kleppin, 24, took second. Scott Bauhs, 27, completed the 5k for the men in under 15 minutes and Natasha Labeaud, 26, finished first for the women with a time a little over 16 minutes.

Course records of the fastest runners of the 5k run included Alistair Cragg for the men, who completed the course in 13 minutes and 44 seconds in 2010. For the women, the fastest 5k run is held by Belainesh Gebre. In 2008, she finished the race a little under 16 minutes. For the 10k, Samuel Kosgei finished the course in under 30 minutes in 2010, while Grace Padilla holds the top spot for women at a little over 35 minutes.
