Posted by Michael Mintos on Nov 1, 2012 - 4:14:59 PM

SANTA MONICA—The Santa Monica Police Department is looking for assistance in identifying a check counterfeiting and forgery suspect. The suspect, in the surveillance image to the right released by police, was aided by another female suspect in scamming customers at the Bank of America branch at 1301 Fourth St. in Santa Monica.

According to authorities, there have been four separate cases, starting in early September, where one of two suspects convinced victims by using deception, to deposit a counterfeit check into their own account.

The victim then withdrew the cash amount equal to the deposit and gave it to the suspects for a small sum in return. Later, the victims learned that they deposited a fraudulent check, leaving their account without the money they gave to the suspects. The average loss for the victim was $4000 to $5000.

One of the suspects was captured on video inside the bank during a fraudulent transaction. According to Santa Monica Police, the suspect is described as a black female, 25-30 years old, medium to muscular build, long dark hair with blond highlights, dark eyes and a tattoo of a “cherry or heart” on her right shoulder. The other suspect is only described as a black female.

Investigators are requesting assistance and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Robert D’Andrea at (310) 458-2201 ext. 6679, Sergeant Henry Ramirez at (310) 458-8453 or the Santa Monica Police Department (24 hours) at (310) 458-8495.
