SANTA MONICA—The Santa Monica Office of Emergency Management was awarded for its work in promoting emergency preparedness
and emergency planning by the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region on Thursday,
November 17. There were more than 200 people in attendance. Gunnar J. Kuepper,
president of International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) and chief
of operations for the Los Angeles emergency and disaster management, was the
guest speaker.
The department was among the many heroes recognized at
the 2nd Annual Heroes Breakfast at the California Club. Emergency
Services Coordinator Paul Weinberg received the Special Community Support Award
on behalf of the city. Vice President of Operations Jane Ha received the
Corporate Hero Award on behalf of Forever 21.
Actor and TV comedian personality David Spade is a
member of the American Red Cross Celebrity Cabinet. He also received the 2011
National Heroes Award and is a generous and ongoing supporter of the
Humanitarian Organization, reports a Red Cross official. Spade offered
financial help to the Red Cross so they can better serve those individuals affected
by tornadoes that devastate the Midwest and Southeast regions.

Also, several other awardees of the 2011 Community
Heroes included Los Angeles City Councilperson Jan Perry, Forever 21, Panda
Restaurant Group and the Walt Disney Company.
According to a Red Cross official, attendance at the
ceremony shows support for Prepare LA, an initiative program that helps build a
stronger more disaster resilient community. The American Red Cross is privately
funded, and the ability to provide service to the community depends on
financial help from the public.
