SANTA MONICA—In an effort to reduce the use of automobiles and encourage the use of bicycles, Santa Monica will open a new Bike Transit Center on Friday, November 18. This will be an all-day event, beginning with a ribbon-cutting event. This bike center location will offer:
· Access controlled bike parking, showers and lockers for members
· Attended bike valet parking for visitors
· Bike rentals and repair services
· Travel information and more
According to the City of Santa Monica’s official site, the integration of the Bike Center is one part of the plan in facilitating the use of bicycles in the city. Earlier this year, the city had installed numerous bicycle racks in commercial areas, such as Montana Avenue and Downtown.
Lucy Dyke, of the Department of Planning & Community Development, is quoted on the official Bike Center site as noting, “Bicycling can be the most enjoyable way to get around Santa Monica. The Bike Center will encourage more people to get in on the fun, and to ride more often. This benefits the whole community with cleaner air, better health, and less traffic.”
The Santa Monica Bike Center is located on the corner of Colorado Street and SecondStreet.
