SANTA MONICA—The 2013 annual Livable Cities survey ranked
Santa Monica among the top 50 best places to live, work and play in
Santa Monica was listed as the 44th most desirable place to live in
America by Livability.com, a website dedicated to studying factors that influence standards of living in small to mid-sized cities.
Livability.com partnered with the Martin Prosperity Institute and Ipsos Public Affairs to produce a comprehensive survey that ranked 1,700 U.S. cities based on aspects found to be most important to a city’s livability. Each city was judged on the eight dimensions of economics, housing, amenities, infrastructure, demographics, education, health care and social and civic capital.
Santa Monica has ranked in the top 50 places to live.
“Our goal was to collect the best data available, from the best sources and the best partners to gauge the true measures of livability,” said Livability.com editor Matt Carmichael in a press release on their website. “By using data from the public sector, the private sector and non-profits focused on these issues, we have compiled an Index that celebrates
America’s great cities and towns.”
The Index tallies up the city’s points in all eight dimensions to create a total LivScore for each city. The top 100 cities with the highest LivScores are featured on the website, with its own profile and LivScore breakdown. The number one place to live in
America was awarded to
Palo Alto with a LivScore of 646. After
Palo Alto, the top five places were
North Carolina and
Santa Monica received a 604 LivScore, placing it after
Arizona, but before
Missouri. Among the eight dimensions,
Santa Monica scored seventh highest in the education category with 87 out of 100 points. The city’s lowest score was for housing, scoring only 39 points.
Santa Monica’s city profile is summarized as “mostly younger, smaller city, mostly renters, mostly singles, mild summer, green city, close to major airport, nearby college/university, close to major sports team.” The City has a population of 90,647 that is mostly Caucasian, 19 years-old or younger and single with no kids. The median household income is $70,174 and residents are ranked as entertainment super spenders and extra spenders for food, health and utilities.
