SANTA MONICA—Santa Monica City College was put on lockdown Friday, June 7 as an armed gunman fired shots on campus. There are currently at least four people wounded with a possibility of more and one has been reported dead.
The school was placed on lockdown after reports came in that there were shots fired. The shooting reportedly occurred shortly before noon on Friday. In case of a chain of shootings, the Santa Monica Police put all Santa Monica public schools on lockdown.
Of the four known wounded victims, three were taken to the Ronald Reagan Medical Center. Two of the victims were listed as being in critical condition while a third was said to be in serious condition. The fourth victim was taken to the UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica, and is said to be in good condition.
The suspect is in police custody. The suspect was detained inside the Santa Monica College library. Authorities have not yet determined whether there was a second shooter involved.
The shooting occurred only three miles away from where President Obama was appearing for a fundraiser. Secret Service agents announced that the shooting is currently considered to be under local police jurisdiction and that it will not affect the President’s agenda.
