SANTA MONICA—The National Park Service (NPS) is currently accepting photographs from amateurs for the annual photo contest, the Spirit of the Mountains Photo Contest.

The deadline to submit pictures for the contest is September 30. Every year, the annual competition allows budding photographers to capture and submit a myriad of photographs that allow them to demonstrate the beauty and diversity of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, as well as other spots of natural beauty.

There are various categories that participants can submit their photographs to. There is a category for Plants, Animals, Scenic Shots and People in Parklands. There is also a further challenge category called Shadows and Highlights.

There are many distinguished photographers among this year's judges panel, including Tom Gamache, Jim Shoemaker and Van Webster.

Saturday, October 19, will be the official exhibition of the photographs submitted to the contest and winners will be announced the same day at 1 p.m. The first place winner will get the privilege of having their entry published in the NP’s quarterly calendar of events, as well in OUTDOORS.

The exhibition will be at the Santa Monica Mountains Visitor Center and all exhibitions will be on display until November 17.

Those interested in participating can apply online at http://www.nps.gov/samo/photocontest.htm or at the Santa Monica Mountains Visitor Center.

Only two photographs per amateur are allowed. Additional details about the photography contest can be obtained by calling 805-370-2301.
