Universally Accessible Playground To Open
Posted by Sebastian Sarti on Jul 10, 2013 - 5:41:31 PM

SANTA MONICA—The Santa Monica State Beach has completed the city’s first Universally Accessible Playground which will open this Saturday, July 13. The new playground is part of an effort to make the state beach a more accessible playground to all patrons.

The new playground is located at South Beach Park and is near the 2900-block of Ocean Front Walk. Its purpose is to give all children greater access and enjoyment of the Santa Monica State Beach.

Santa Monica’s mayor, Pam O’Connor along with members from the Santa Monica Disabilities Commission and members from Recreations & Parks Commission will be officially opening the new playground at 10 a.m.

For a playground to be considered Universally Accessible, it should include a great amount of maneuvering space and barrier-free equipment. The playground is not only wheelchair accessible; it also takes into account the needs and limitations of children with hearing impairments, seeing disabilities, cognitive impairments, physical disabilities, and autism. It includes regular playground equipment such as swings, slides, sand, and climbing equipment.

The new playground will have a marine theme in order to coalesce with the state beach. The playground has been designed as if it were ship and is meant to welcome visitors to Santa Monica’s beaches.
