The program was sponsored by The Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library, who provided materials, programs and prizes during the 10-week program.
The program was designed to help increase the literacy rate of children and teens during the summer break to help them retain knowledge, as well as increase their reading level.
The programs included: a “Baby & Me” club, a “Read to Me” club, an “Independent Readers” club and a “Teen Reading” club. One of the reading programs that encouraged reading for 30 (or more) hours, as well as a Teen Writers’ Day featuring local award-winning authors.
Some of the prizes included a pizza party, as well as a book giveaway. During the 10-week program, more than 800 teenagers attended the event, writing 221 book reviews for other teens, to help them decide on the next book to read.
There was increase of 30 percent more teenagers participating this year compared to last year. The total number of attendees reached 14,707, which triples the number 10 years ago.
