80-Year-Old Store Owner Chases Burglars

SHERMAN OAKS—An elderly jewelery store owner chased a pair of armed robbers from his Sherman Oaks store and police are seeking the public's help in capturing the suspects.

The burglary occurred at Riverton Jewelers in the area of Coldwater Canyon Avenue and Riverside Drive on February 2 at approximately 3:50 p.m. when two suspects began smashing display cases with hammers and removing several watches. Store owner Chuck Lire, 80, attempted to stop the two burglars but was pushed away.

The suspects managed to flee the scene with the stolen items and jumped into a light colored compact vehicle. The entire exchange took a total of about nine seconds. The suspects were caught on the store's surveillance camera the day before posing as customers. Lire reported that 15 to 20 watches were stolen with a worth of about $40,000 which includes two Rolex pieces.

The first suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 25 to 30 years old, five feet ten inches tall and weighs about 170 pounds. The second suspect is also described as Hispanic at about five feet eight inches tall and weighs about 150 pounds.
