I-405 Closes Along With Coldwater Canyon Ave
Posted by Kyle Maloney on Mar 25, 2013 - 2:15:52 PM

SHERMAN OAKS—Just as Coldwater Canyon Avenue closed for five weeks, a second major road was blocked off from traffic’s use on Saturday, March 23.

The 405 San Diego Freeway was closed Saturday night when I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project contractors scheduled a full directional northbound freeway closure for roughly four miles between the Getty Center ramps and the 101 freeway. Work on the reconstruction of the Mulholland Bridge was the reason for the freeway closure.

Weekend construction on northbound 405 Freeway.

According to Metro officials, the original plans for a full closure of the freeway were deemed unnecessary, and instead construction narrowed the five-lane freeway to two lanes. Traffic was congested on many surface streets near and around the freeway, and also on alternate routes between the westside and the San Fernando Valley.

Last week, City Councilman Paul Krekorian addressed some concerned residents of the Sherman Oaks and Studio City area saying that he would make sure all other maintenance projects were aware of the Coldwater Canyon closure and that they should try and impact it as little as possible.

Decisions to shut down Coldwater Canyon Avenue in order to replace a burst trunk line went into effect this past Saturday, leaving Coldwater Canyon Avenue inaccessible starting at 8:30 a.m. between Mulholland Drive and Ventura Boulevard every day with the exception of Sundays. The road is set to reopen at 7 p.m. week nights, and at 6 p.m. on Sundays.

“It’s vitally important to the city to have this water main replaced, and there’s just no way to complete the job without having the Coldwater Canyon closure for that limited amount of time,” Krekorian said. “There’s no question about it, it’s going to be real inconvenient for the periods that this construction is going on.”

Since the official closure of Coldwater Canyon Avenue last weekend, Laurel Canyon and the 405 Freeway have both received the expected amount of traffic jams and slowed travel time.
