Krekorian Lights Menorah For Hanukkah
Posted by Daniel Antolin on Dec 22, 2011 - 2:31:33 AM

SHERMAN OAKS—During the afternoon of Wednesday, December 21, Councilmember Paul Krekorian, who represents Los Angeles's Second District, joined with his constituents at the Westfield Fashion Square in Sherman Oaks for the Chanukah Festival & Menorah Lighting event.

Krekorian arrived at about 5 p.m. and climbed a small ladder to help light the giant jelly bean-filled menorah on the shopping mall's second level near the Macy's and Ann Taylor store. While there, Krekorian joined Chabad of Sherman Oaks and Chabad of North Hollywood in celebration of the second night of Hanukkah, the eight-day annual Jewish holiday that this year began at sunset on December 20 and lasts until sunset on December 28.

In addition to being able to see Krekorian, mall patrons say they saw "L.A. Law" alumnus Harry Hamlin, former "CHiPs" star Erik Estrada and comedic actor Christopher Titus. Facebook users who were there looking for gifts posted on the mall's page that they witnessed the stars doing some holiday shopping of their own.

Kids who stopped by the Hanukkah event between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. were able to see performers from Cirque du Soleil's "Iris" and "Ovo," a Chabad Hebrew School performance, enjoy kosher latkes and donuts, get their picture taken with Judah the Maccabee, paint their own driedel, and more.

Hanukkah, also known as The Festival of Lights, commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem during the Maccabean Revolt in 2nd century BCE. During this time, a Jewish rebel army took control of Judea from the Seleucid Empire. They found only enough pure olive oil to light the menorah for a day, but it lasted eight days. This is why the Hanukkah menorah has eight branches on which to light eight candles.
