Public Hearing On Helicopter Noise
Posted by Damian Kelly on Aug 1, 2012 - 1:44:04 PM

SHERMAN OAKS—Congressman Howard Berman announced that a public hearing regarding helicopter noise in the neighborhood will be held in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration on Monday, August 6.

A news release from Berman’s office indicates that from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Millikan Middle School’s Burrill Hall, residents are invited to share their experiences with the helicopter noise and the effects it has on their quality of life. The hearing, which will serve as the lone opportunity for public input on the issue, will allow the FAA to collect information and help create a change in policy.  Speakers will be allowed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

A hearing was announced after residents complained about helicopter operators increasingly straying away from specified flight paths and traveling over residential neighborhoods, thus creating incessant buzzing on their routes.

In May of this year, Berman, along with Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer and other Los Angeles-area legislators, sent a letter to U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood requesting a meeting in order to identify and respond to the concerns surrounding this issue.

Berman commented in a statement on the importance of the hearing.

“Our views and input will play a significant role in determining how the FAA addresses this issue. We have shared our frustration about this problem with our friends, neighbors and local elected officials. Now the FAA must hear our voices and implement changes that place the well-being of Valley residents before the interests of a few helicopter operators. We are long overdue to find a commonsense solution to this constant problem,” Berman said.

Residents are being encouraged to arrive early to the hearing so that as many members of the community can provide their input to the FAA as possible. Millikan Middle School is located at 5041 Sunnyslope Ave.  Parking will be available at the school and also on the street.  Anyone with questions may call (818) 994-7200.
