SHERMAN OAKS–Congressmen Howard Berman (D-Valley Village) and Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks) are contending for the San Fernando Valley’s newly outlined 30th Congressional District. The race is unique, and it has been watched closely by the communities in the district.
Berman, who has served for 29 years, hopes to clinch the seat and has raised $2.3 million in funds. Sherman, assuming his office in 2003, leads with $3.7 million in campaign donations. A preliminary poll from the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley (DPSFV), an unofficial collection of Democratic clubs, showed Sherman receiving 62 percent of the vote. At the Democratic Convention, one of the two will be endorsed by the Democratic National Party (DNP). Later, the two will face off in an open primary in June 2012 to determine the Democratic nomination for the election next year.

As of November 22, Berman has come from behind and taken the lead in fundraising. In a statement to the press, Berman reminded his constituents, “I deliver.”
“Congressman Sherman feels very confident about winning this race because he has a strong history of effective leadership in the Valley,” Parke Skelton, a consultant for Sherman, told Canyon News. “No one is more accessible or responsible."
Though Sherman still won the majority in the DPSFV poll, it is still a tight race. Later, the two will face off in an open primary in June 2012 to determine the Democratic nominee for the election next year.
