Three Candidates File To Replace LaBonge
Posted by Melissa Simon on Sep 4, 2013 - 11:42:44 AM

SHERMAN OAKS—Councilman Tom LaBonge’s term is coming to an end in 2015 and three candidates filed papers with intentions to fill the spot on September 3, which is 18 months before the March 3, 2015, election date and the earliest a candidate can begin raising money. Candidates cannot officially file until November 2014.

The candidates running include Carolyn Ramsay, LaBonge’s chief of staff; Teddy Davis, press secretary during Antonio Villaraigosa’s last three years as mayor; and Tara Bannister, vice president for the National Apartment Association. All three filed paperwork with the city’s Ethics Commission.

Ramsay, a former journalist and community activist for the past dozen years, said she hopes to bring innovative ideas to the job. She has been part of the purchase of the Cahuenga Peak and helped lead an effort to place a median on Larchmont Boulevard.

“A city council race is really about relationships and about being involved in the district and the people and the work that they want to do that is consistent with making the city a better place," said Ramsay. "I've engaged in this work for the last 15 years and I want to keep doing it," she added.

Davis, former ABC News deputy political director, said he would continue to build on the work that LaBonge has done in the district, with one of his top priorities being to push for improved public transportation between the San Fernando Valley and the Westside.

“I’m running for City Council because I want L.A. to work for every family in every neighborhood,” Davis said. “Between now and 2015, I will be in every corner of our district talking with voters about how we can create jobs, reduce traffic and keep neighborhoods clean and safe," he added.

LaBonge represents Council District 4, which goes from Hancock Park to Hollywood and includes Toluca Lake, Los Feliz, Sherman Oaks and Windsor Square. He has been in the position for 14 years after he won a special election to take over for the late Councilman John Ferraro who died in office and now must step down due to term limits.
