SHERMAN OAKS—Van Nuys Airport will be hosting Community Day on Saturday, August 31 to celebrate their 85th anniversary.
The event will feature free parking, a behind-the-scenes tour of the airport, free guided airfield bus tours, plane-spotting and vintage aircraft designs as well as the grand opening of the newly improved main runway, 16R, according to the event page. The behind-the-scenes tour will take place every 30 minutes, beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 3 p.m.

The runway’s renovation began in July as the last phase of a $20.5 million improvement project. Jess Romo, Van Nuys Airport manager, said they were looking forward to the completion of the project and preserving the role of the airport as Los Angeles’ No. 1 business airport.
Philip Aune posted the following comment on the airport’s Facebook page: “I am so sorry that I will be unable to attend the 16R Community Day. Am going to be gone that week. VNY Airport always brings back many memories.” Aune goes on to say that the airport is No. 1 in his book.
The event page said there will be complimentary shuttles to take people to the airfield tour site and they ask that attendees do not bring large bags, backpacks, coolers or alcoholic beverages, as all bags will be checked.
