SHERMAN OAKS–Leaves and branches are strewn along Riverside Dr. and other major streets after high winds Wednesday evening. Between 5:51 p.m. and 7:51 p.m. that evening, The National Weather Service reported winds between 25 and 35 miles-per-hour with gusts reaching up to 47 m.p.h.; wind in the 20s and gusts in the 30s were also present Thursday afternoon.
The wind storm swept across parts of the East San Fernando Valley, though Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley received the brunt of the storm. Burbank, Glendale, La Cresenta, Sherman Oaks and Studio City are among almost a dozen cities experiencing heavy winds. Electricity has gone out for almost 200,000 people, and the Sherman Oaks Department of Water and Power (DWP) said about 200 customers are still without power.
“The whole situation didn’t really affect us,” Mairead and Seamus McAllister, two Sherman Oaks residents, told Canyon News. “The freeway was really busy. The school our daughter attends in the Hollywood Hills lost power so we had to take our daughter Fiachra to school later.” Notre Dame High School remained open despite the weather, as well as several other schools in the area. Campbell Hall in Studio City closed due to electrical issues in the area.
With some out of power for up to a week, many citizens and storeowners remain without refrigerators and computers to power their appliances.
