STUDIO CITY—A body was found tied to a tree near the prestigious private school Harvard-Westlake in Studio City by the school's security guard at around 8 a.m. on Friday, June 15.
James Ernest Oberg was reported missing two weeks prior to his death.
"According to my experience
working homicide, it looked like he had been there a couple of days,"
said Jim Crawford, Harvard-Westlake School's head of security and former police officer. His
statement was released by police. Crawford went on to say that he noticed the body when he was clearing out brush and the body was not a member of the Harvard-Westlake community.
The body was recently identified as 57-year-old James Ernest Oberg whose death may be a result of suicide as he died of asphyxiation, however, the investigation is ongoing. Oberg was reported missing by police from his nearby home over two weeks ago and his family was very worried for his safety as he was described as possibly suicidal. Multiple photos were issued of Oberg in a missing persons list.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Oberg was seen last on the morning of May 31 near his home in the 3900 block of Coldwater Canyon Avenue.
