Car Free SFV Earth Day
Posted by Megan Leong on May 8, 2014 - 11:01:27 AM

STUDIO CITY—On May 4, Studio City hosted the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition’s Car Free San Fernando Valley Earth Day. The event asked people in the region to pledge to use other forms of transportation aside from driving, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

The official event was held at the Los Angeles River Greenway in Studio City, near Valleyheart Drive and Radford Avenue, according to the LACBC website. The event consisted of “Morning Yoga by the River” at 8:45 a.m., “May the Forest Be with You” bike ride and a “Car Free Scavenger Hunt and Walk,” both which took place at 10:00 a.m.

By pledging online, individuals were entered into a prize raffle to win either a Braven Bluetooth speaker, four tickets to the CBS July 4 Celebration, an LACBC membership package, a bike repair kit, or an LA River Regatta Club membership. Participants also received an all-day discount from the restaurants and businesses that participated in the event including California Pizza Kitchen, Big Sugar Bakeshop, and Peet’s Coffee & Tea.

The pledge states, “I pledge that between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on May 4, 2014, I will reduce/eliminate my driving and will instead get around by walking, biking, public transportation, or carpooling.” The idea of the event was to highlight the ease of using alternative modes of transportation and to decrease emissions caused by cars.

The official Car Free SFV site states “GETTING OUT OF THE CAR IS GOOD FOR YOU (it's healthier and less stressful), IT'S GOOD FOR OUR COMMUNITY (it reduces traffic and pollution), AND IT'S GOOD FOR THE PLANET (it creates fewer harmful emissions).”

The site also provides statistics for all the benefits of going car-free. Car Free SFV Earth Day was hosted by the L.A. County Bicycle Coalition, in partnership with L.A. River Revitalization Corp., FAST (Fixing Angelenos Stuck in Traffic), Carpenter Community Charter School PTA, Walter Reed Middle School Environmental Science Academy, Councilman Tom LaBonge, the Sherman Oaks Chamber of Commerce and Back to Wellness Center.

The Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition has declared May as “Bike Month” and those who are interested can find additional information about upcoming events by visiting http://www.la-bike.org/events.
