STUDIO CITY—Police and firefighters rushed to actress Miley Cyrus' home in Studio City on Wednesday, August 1, as someone reported a kidnapping and gunfire taking place. It turned out, however, that the 911 call was a hoax.

The police received a call indicating someone had been shot and someone was being kidnapped on Cyrus' property. The Los Angeles Police Department responded to the call by arriving at her home around 7 p.m. armed with automatic weapons and dressed in their SWAT gear.
It soon became clear that no one was home and there was no one in danger. Police have reported that incidents with swatting are currently on the rise. Swatting is when someone makes an anonymous prank call reporting a crime extreme enough that would cause a SWAT team to appear at an innocent person's home.
Police are now trying to track the call in order to convict whoever was involved in the prank, which is classified as a misdemeanor in California and can lead to one year in jail.
