Locals' Effort To Save Henry's Tacos
Posted by Ivetta Babadjanian on Dec 18, 2012 - 11:20:13 PM

STUDIO CITY—Hundreds of people lined up for blocks in the rain on Sunday, December 16 to show their support of Henry's Tacos in Studio City. The self-proclaimed "tacky taco stand" has been open for business for nearly 51 years, but it may end up closing by the end of the year.

Various celebrities came to show their support including George Lopez, Adam Corolla and Elijah Wood. Owner Janis Hood stated that her landlord, property owner Mehran Ebrahimpour of Beverly Hills, raised her rent by 50 percent making it difficult to afford keeping her business open.

In December of last year, the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission voted 5-0 in favor of nominating Henry's Tacos as a historical landmark the year of its 50th anniversary. According to Hood, however, her landlord objected the nomination and stated it could affect the property's sale or development.

"While I have always been supportive of a historical designation for the building, the passionate effort by many in our community to save Henry's continues to be best directed to the business owner and the property owner," said Councilman Paul Krekorian in a statement. "For it is they alone who will decide whether Henry's will continue."

More than 4,400 people signed a petition to "Save Henry's," but Hood states the business will likely close on December 31. The business was built by her grandfather Henry Comstock in 1961, preceding the first Taco Bell.

"Thank you everyone who came out to support Henry's Tacos today," tweeted Aaron Paul, star of "Breaking Bad." "Truly amazing. So nice to see the beautiful community come together."
