STUDIO CITY—Participants will be taking their steps with
pride at Studio City’s first annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event on
August 5.
Organized by the American Cancer Society, Making Strides
Against Breast Cancer is a non-competitive three-mile walk or run held in
cities throughout the country, striving to raise breast cancer awareness.
“I wish these types of events were around when my
grandmother was struggling with her treatment,” said Event Co-Chair Tina Sarkoob
in an interview with Canyon News. “I think it’s brought about a lot of
awareness and new treatments.”
Though the event has no registration fees or fundraising
minimum, participants can raise funds or donate to the event which benefits the
American Cancer Society’s commitment to breast cancer research and patient
resources such as transportation for treatment and education initiatives. The Studio
City Making Strides Against Breast Cancer has currently raised more than $8,000.
“Our main purpose is to raise awareness. For men or women,
the earlier they’re diagnosed, the more likely they are to be able to fight,”
said American Cancer Society Special Events Manager Allison Winslow in an
interview with Canyon News.
The event in Studio City will include many activities such
as cancer informational booths, a DJ, Zumba instruction and face-painting, to
make the walk enjoyable for “people of all ages,” Winslow said. Vendors such as
5-Hour ENERGY and O.N.E Coconut Water will also be available at
the event.
Survivor appreciation is an important part of
the event. Though survivors do not have to inform anyone of their status, “they
are recognized for their struggles, and at this event, given a medal,” Winslow
said.
There
are currently about 100 people registered for the event, but since registration
remains open, many attendees may register on the day of the event, Winslow said.
Based on her experiences managing the event in other cities, Winslow said
attendance usually ranges from 300 to 600 people.
“It’s been fun, great and interesting to bring the community
together,” Sarkoob said. “We tabled at the Studio City Farmer’s Market and had
a great reaction.”
The 2012
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Studio City will be held at the CBS
studios on August 5. Registration opens at 8 a.m. and the walk will run from
9-11:30 a.m.
