Girasol's dining room
—On July 1, Girasol restaurant opened from “Top Chef” alum C.J. Jacobson.

The building once known as the 8 ½ Taverna on Moorpark Street is now the new debut restaurant for Jacobson.

Having previously provided his culinary efforts towards Mercantile in Los Angeles, Norma in Denmark and seasons 3 and 10 of “Top Chef,” Jacobson is no newcomer, as food and diners are familiar with his skill.  Girasol, meaning sunflower in Spanish, opened last Monday night and the turn out was impressive.  The dining restaurant is open Monday-Wednesday nights, 5:00 to 10:00 p.m., and Thursday-Saturday night, 5:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m.

Jacobson is from El Toro, CA and his culinary inspirational roots are drawn from local produce found at Los Angeles farmer’s markets.  He uses similar ingredients in his cooking.  Some of Girasol’s signature dishes include: octopus salad with long-roasted eggplant, sweet and sour chili and toasted lovage; whole fried red snapper with crispy greens, fermented Fresno chili, sauce of kumquat, sorrel and citrus; and olive oil cake with peaches, crème fraîche and house-made fruit leather, as detailed by his opening last week.  Girasol has an impressive collection of California based beers and wines to accompany each dish.

The 120-seat restaurant was designed by G+, Red O, Hyde, and Roxbury designer Gulla Jonsdottir.  Under her creation, she designed Girasol’s sleek bar area, outside patio and warm toned dining room.

After his “Top Chef” days, Jacobson already had Girasol in mind and was previously said in a “Top Chef” interview that his new project will have a “very, very seasonally driven menu.”  Jacobson has yet to put a “Top Chef” creation on his Girasol menu.  In the future, Jacobson plans on opening a restaurant with George Abou-Daoud in the next few years.

For reservations at Girasol call (818) 924-2323. The restaurant is located at 11334 Moorpark Street.
