STUDIO CITY—The evening of Tuesday, November 8, saw the streets of Studio City return to normal after two water mains that ruptured in the city were replaced. According to reports, the first main break occurred on the evening of November 7 at approximately 8:15 p.m. in the 12000 block of Ventura Boulevard, closing the heavily traveled area between Whitsett and Coldwater Canyon Avenue.
MaryAnne Pierson, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, said 95 customers, mostly businesses, were without water as their service was shut off due to the flooding.
A second main fractured at approximately 3:40 a.m. near Ventura and Lankershim Boulevard. The southbound lane on Ventura Boulevard was closed while crews worked to replace the broken main and repair a sinkhole that was caused by the flooding. An estimated 20 businesses in this area were without water, Pierson added. At press time, no home and business damage was reported. Ventura Boulevard was reopened and water service was restored to customers after crews worked for 12 hours to replace the mains.
DWP officials say there is usually an increase in water main breaks when colder water enters the water system from the Eastern Sierra Nevadas and shrinks the pipes.
The water main break that occurred at Whitsett and Coldwater Canyon Avenue was in the same area where a 62-inch trunkline ruptured two years ago, washing away cars and flooding several homes.
