Community Police Academy Coming Soon
Posted by Melissa Simon on Aug 7, 2013 - 3:42:44 PM

TOPANGA CANYON—The Operations-Valley Bureau will be holding another Community Police Academy beginning on September 12 at the Davis Training Facility.

Officer Todd, with the Operations-Valley Bureau, told Canyon News these community academies have been taking place for about five years now. Anyone over the age of 18 with no felony convictions, no warrants and no pending criminal cases are welcome.

“Everyone is pretty much welcome, but you do have to pass a background check,” he said. “You are coming to the Academy at Davis, which is our secured range area so you can’t be on felony probation or something like that.”

The Community Police Academy lasts for a period of eight weeks, with several different classes during the duration, and each session will last for three hours.

“The classes range from homicide to identity thefts, domestic violence, commercial crimes, officer survival skills and probation and parole,” Todd said. “They will learn about traffic including why we cite, how we cite and what happens after a citation; a gang officer comes in and teaches them about gangs in the area; a juvenile officer talks about juvenile offenders; and I think this next session, we’re going to have a detention officer, someone who works in the jail, come in and talk about what happens when someone is incarcerated in the county or city jail.”

When the eight-week classes are over, there will be a graduation held at the Mission division with a dinner included afterward for a free. Todd said there is no fee for the actual classes and there are no uniform requirements.

“If you want to attend you have to go to your division’s senior lead officer and ask to be put on the list,” he said. “We have plenty of openings and no one has ever been turned away, unless you have either a warrant or felony conviction.”

Todd explained that the LAPD is broken into the following seven divisions: Van Nuys, Devonshire, Mission, North Hollywood, Topanga and Foothill.

“It’s a good opportunity for the community members who are just trying to figure out what we do and how we do things,” he said.

The classes will be held at the Davis Training Center at 12001 Blucher Ave. in Granada Hills, according to Todd.

In order to attend, the community notice on the LAPD Topanga Division’s nixle said to email the following information to topangapolice@lapd.lacity.org: name, address, phone number and email address.
