TCEP To Enhance Emergency Communication

TOPANGA—On Saturday, June 25, the Topanga Disaster Radio Team (DRT) will initiate an exercise organized by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) in which hams (amateur radio operators) will carry out and perfect the communication that would take place in a natural disaster.

Since 2008, the Topanga Coalition for Emergency Preparedness has sustained their addendum, the DRT, in joining with thousands of other operators who will implement the same safety practices.

The 24-hour event, Field Day, has become an annual occurrence performed on a provisional base from Summit to Summit. From here, multiple radio stations can work toward covering the entire Southern California region, throughout North America and the rest of the world. The established goal of the operators is that “1,500 contacts will communicate with 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces."

Citizens that plan to tune in are being encouraged to use the exact sources (non-electric/alternative) that would be utilized in emergency situations (natural disasters, harsh weather, etc.) in efforts to become comfortable with the methods that will need to be employed, seeing as electricity is usually the first of resources to stop functioning.

According to the Topanga neighborhood website, co-director of the Topanga Disaster Radio Team, Bryce Anderson, stated, “Even in this age of cell phones, IM, text messages and email, when disasters strike and the normal infrastructure is disrupted, amateur radio is often the only way people communicate.”

Anderson also mentioned that this was exhibited during recent natural disasters such as tsunamis and earthquakes. Throughout this occasion, the public will have the opportunity to meet and question operators. For more information, call 310-497-8108.
