TOPANGA—44-year-old Rafael Villalobos of Long Beach was killed in a motorcycle crash in Topanga Canyon at 12:29 p.m. Sunday. Villalobos was riding three-and-a-half miles north of Pacific Coast Highway when he lost control of his Ducati bike, slid onto the right-hand shoulder, and crashed into the guardrail.

Public Information Officer, Leland Tang, of the California Highway Patrol told Canyon News that the accident occurred for “unknown reasons.” Tang was unsure if Villalobos was speeding, or if something else caused him to lose control of his vehicle and slide off the road.

Villalobos was treated onsite by officials and then flown by air at 1:06 p.m. to UCLA Hospital. He was pronounced dead upon arrival. Tang was unsure if Villalobos has ridden from Long Beach to Topanga that day. “It will take time to get more background information,” Tang stated.

Villalobos was one of five who died in Los Angeles-area traffic accidents this holiday weekend. The Labor Day death toll outnumbered last years, as well as Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekends this year.

L.A. County authorities arrested over 220 people this past holiday weekend on suspicion of drunk driving, almost 30 more than last year. Officials are uncertain as to why the numbers of accidents and arrests spiked this year. Unfortunately, Villalobos was one of those deaths this holiday period.
