WEST HOLLYWOOD—Jason James Murphy, a Hollywood casting associate and registered sex offender, has been charged with violating terms of his registration after failing to notify West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station detectives that he had moved out of their jurisdiction and was using an alias.According to an LASD community alert, Murphy, whose recent work includes the 2012 release “The Three Stooges” and JJ Abrams' “Super 8,” turned himself in to detectives on Friday, December 9, after a $500,000 warrant was issued for his arrest by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office in Beverly Hills.

The 35-year-old's arrest occurred after detectives found that he had not been living in the City of West Hollywood and was using Jason James as an alias for his film work. This violated terms (Section 290 PC of the Penal Code) that he had agreed to in writing during his registration as a sex offender on April 22, 2009.According to LASD, this section of the Penal Code states that a sex offender is to notify law enforcement when using an alias and when moving out of their jurisdiction.
At the time of his registration, Murphy had told detectives that he was living within the West Hollywood jurisdiction.Detectives later found this to be false after conducting their own investigation based on information they received from the press and other law enforcement agencies regarding Murphy’s activities.According to information from the National Sex Offender website, Murphy’s last known address was located in West Hollywood. However, at the bottom of Murphy’s profile page, it states the following: “The Registrant May Have Subsequently Relocated.”
LASD is currently asking for the public’s help in identifying possible crimes involving Murphy.Anyone with information is urged to contact West Hollywood detectives at (310) 855-8850 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting (310) 855-8850end_of_the_skype_highlighting.Information can also be provided anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting (800) 222-8477end_of_the_skype_highlighting or by texting the letters “TIPLA” plus your tip to CRIMES (274637).Lacrimestoppers.com also may be used.
