Extended Parking Meters On The Horizon
Posted by Damian Kelly on Oct 11, 2012 - 2:17:11 PM

WEST HOLLYWOOD—Extended parking meters are in store for residents and visitors to the city in the near future, according to recent reports.

A recommendation is expected to be made by city staff to the Transportation Commission and City Council at a meeting on October 24 as the turnover of parking spots in the city has been minimal.  This has been due to meters shutting off at 6 p.m., thereby allowing visitors to park in a spot for an extended amount of time.

The city believes extending the hours of the meters will help parking in the city, specifically on the Westside, flow smoother.

While the hours are not final, staff reportedly plans to recommend meters on the Westside to remain operational until 2 a.m. Monday to Saturday, similar to meters on Sunset Boulevard.  As for the Eastside, which goes towards Fairfax, staff will recommend meters stay on until 10 p.m.  Parking meters on Sunday would have hours of 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for both areas.

There are possible negatives to the plan such as employees of local businesses who often park their cars at meters.  Officials say they hope to start a program which will permit employees to park at meter spots with a special permit.

But officials want meter parking spots to be designated for visitors to the city, not residents choosing to drive a few blocks or late night visitors that plan to stay overnight.

The city hopes to implement the extended hour meters plan by January 1, 2013.
