LGBT Heritage Month
Posted by Shelby Stiner on Jun 5, 2013 - 3:14:50 PM

Mayor Villaraigosa presenting Rodney Scott with award.
WEST HOLLYWOODThe month of June has been marked as LGBT Heritage month and the city of Los Angeles has planned events to celebrate LGBT pride.

The celebrations began last Friday, May 31 at the LGBT Heritage Month kickoff event at City Hall. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa honored "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert, criminal defense attorney Mia Yamamoto and LA Pride President Rodney Scott, for their work within the LGBT community.

Lambert was given the Hope Award for his work in organizations such as The Trevor Project, Equality California and GLAAD all which raise awareness about LGBT causes.

Yamamoto, who is the co-chair of the Multi-Cultural bar Alliance, which is a coalition of minority, women and gay and lesbian bar associations, received the Dream Award for her work fighting for LGBT causes.

The Spirit Award went to Scott for his work with LA Pride, also known as the Christopher Street West Association, which organized the world’s first gay pride parade in Los Angeles over 40 years ago.

Mayor Villaraigosa also recognized producer David Reid, A Window Between Worlds founder Cathy Salser and ONE, the largest repository of LGBTQ materials in the world, for their work within the LGBT community.

The festivities begin tonight with an outdoor celebration on the West Hollywood City Hall’s South Lawn and Grand Park.

There will be many more activities filling the month such as the LA Pride Festival; the sixth annual Dyke Day LA, a free day at the Barnsdall Art Park for all members of the LGBT community and straight allies; a pride party in East Los Angeles; a casino night hosted by the Historical Society of Long Beach; and the pride parade on Sunday, June 9, with Extra TV host Maria Menounos as the grand marshal.
