WEST HOLLYWOOD—Metro bus driver Allen Thomas was shot and killed while on the job on Sunday, May 20 in West Hollywood. He was shot in the chest at point blank range by a passenger around 9 a.m. as he was driving the route 05 bus east on Santa Monica Boulevard near La Cienaga Boulevard.
A bus supervisor in the area noticed the bus drift backward and hit another car. When he came on board the bus to check the conditions of the passengers he found Thomas severely injured.
The 51-year-old who had been working for the MTA for five years was sent to Cedars Sinai Hospital when he was officially pronounced dead around 9:30 a.m. His friends and former co-workers held a small memorial in his honor, lighting candles and placing flowers by the shooting scenes. A candlelight vigil has been planned for Thomas on Monday night at Metro Division 7.
The suspect was identified as 41-year-old Los Angeles resident Anthony Craig. Police reports state that witnesses saw Chambers climb out of a window and run down the street. He did not run for long and eventually submitted to the deputies without further incident. Police are unclear whether Craig sneaked on the bus or was allowed on board as he was the only passenger at the time of the shooting. A bomb squad was also called onto the scene of the crime due to a suspicious looking package on the bus but was announced as harmless. Two guns were also recovered on the bus.
Craig was booked at the West Hollywood Sheriff's Office and is being held on $1 million bail.
