West Hollywood Shows Their LGBT Pride
Posted by Camille Sarabia on Jun 13, 2013 - 12:41:38 AM

WEST HOLLYWOOD—Deemed as one of the largest gay pride events in the country, the 43rd annual 2013 LA Pride Celebration gathered together the LGBT community and their supporters for the three-day event.

Taking place on during the weekend of June 7-9 at West Hollywood Park, the LA Pride Festival is noted for gathering the largest LGBT community in Southern California.  The event included live stages, music and dance performances, as well as food and drink vendors. The performances lasted two days, but on the last day, the group gathered to join a parade line traveling west to the LA Festival entrance on San Vicente Blvd.

The parade, which started at 11 a.m. on Sunday, included over 400,000 participants.  The streets filled the West Hollywood area and from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Romaine Street to Fountain Avenue, Fairfax to Doheny Drive and Fairfax Avenue to La Peer Drive were closed down for the day.

Christopher Street West Association Inc. steadily plans this festival each year. Their goal each year is to provide “a mission aimed at building the grassroots power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force trains activists, aids state and local organizations in building campaigns to defeat anti-LGBT referenda and advance pro-LGBT legislation,” as stated on their LA Pride and Proud Of It event website.

The Parade Grand Marshal is thought to be the highlight of the LA Pride Festival.  Maria Menounos has been asked to host the parade because of her notable efforts put towards the causes and goals of the LGBT community.  Menounos showed her activism towards anti-bullying, HIV/AIDS and equality.

Each year, this event embodies the joint concerns of equality, diversity, community and of course, the united rights of gay pride.
