WESTWOOD—The Westside Subway Extension project has been approved for a nine-mile extension of the Metro Rail Purple Line Subway that will extend to Westwood. There will be seven new stations including two in Westwood (Westwood/UCLA and Westwood/Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital). The UCLA recommended station location would be below Wilshire being an extension from Westwood Boulevard to Veteran. The VA Hospital station location would be below the hospital parking lot on Wilshire extending east from Bonsall to I-405 freeway. This metro extension is to improve the traffic congestion in the Los Angeles area.
May of this year brought the approval of the second and third phases of the extension project bringing the metro to Westwood. The Metro Board of Directors then successfully certified the Final Environmental Impact Statement/Environmental Impact Report (EIS/EIR), leaving the next step of the project to gather funds and start plans for construction. The estimated start for pre-construction activities will begin near the end of 2012 and official construction starting next year.
The Metro board is pushing to accelerate Measure R in hopes that the Westwood extension will be completed in ten years at 2022, instead of the estimated completion date being in 2036. Measure R is the completion of transit work in ten years, as a better alternative compared to it being done in thirty years.
