Sunset Boulevard Off-Ramp To Close

WESTWOOD—As the I-405 project continues its planned improvements, commuters will now have to contend with the 120 day closure of the northbound Sunset Boulevard off-ramp beginning on August 3, and extending past Thanksgiving.

Announced on Wednesday, July 24, the project improvements scheduled at Sunset Boulevard include the widening of the Sunset Bridge over the I-405, the expansion of Church Lane (which may require up to 10 months), and continued structuring of retaining walls.

In a press release, Metro urged northbound freeway motorists “to plan ahead to determine alternate routes, allow extra time to reach destinations, eliminate unnecessary trips to avoid peak congestion and/or consider ridesharing and public transit options.”

The extended closure is necessary for the construction of a longer off-ramp, which when complete will be 60 percent longer with a wider capacity to store vehicles and more success at separating traffic from Sunset Boulevard and the northbound I-405, according to the transportation company. The new off-ramp layout will also feature two right-turn lanes to eastbound Sunset and one left-turn lane to westbound Sunset.

Sepulveda Boulevard will also undergo changes in access; it will continue to operate during the day, but commuters can expect the boulevard to be closed from Montana Avenue to Moraga Drive at night from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Metro also provided the following detours in the press release:

Westbound Sunset

Daytime: Northbound I-405 off-ramp to westbound Wilshire Boulevard, to northbound Sepulveda Boulevard, to eastbound Sepulveda Way, to westbound Sunset Boulevard.

Alternate: Moraga Drive off-ramp, to southbound Sepulveda Boulevard, right on Church Lane to Sunset Boulevard.

Nighttime: Northbound I-405 off-ramp to westbound Wilshire Boulevard, right on northbound San Vicente Boulevard, right onto north Barrington Avenue, left onto westbound Sunset Boulevard.

Eastbound Sunset

Northbound I-405 off-ramp to eastbound Wilshire Boulevard, to northbound Veteran Avenue to eastbound Sunset Boulevard.

The Sunset Boulevard off-ramp is expected to close at 10 p.m. on the scheduled date. For more information on the project and/or detour maps, visit www.metro.net/405. Those interested may also follow the project on Facebook and Twitter.
