WOODLAND HILLS—Over the last month, the LAPD Topanga Division noted that there has been a rise in cell phone thefts in the areas of Canoga Park, Winnetka and Woodland Hills.

On July 18, the Topanga Division released an advisory on Nixle, the community message board for advisories and other such announcements, about the rise in thefts and gave a description of the suspects. According to the advisory, the “suspects are described as male, blacks, 6-0 to 6-2, thin builds, approximately 16-19 years old.”

The advisory goes on to warn residents that the suspects approach potential victims through the ruse of asking to borrow their phone and fleeing once they have the phone in hand.

The advisory encourages people to be cautious and all those “with cell phones that can download track my phone, to do so.” Track my phone is an app that allows a phone to be tracked if lost or stolen and aids in the recovery of the device.
